WHEN AND HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Performing team volunteers learn and execute stunts, cheers, and dance routines to raise funds and aloha in our community. Individuals interested in joining the performing team are encouraged to attend one of our scheduled open practices that are held throughout the year. Send us an email so that we can let you know when the next one is.
Rally team volunteers serve supportive, non-performing roles that help to ensure our performances and fundraisers are successful. They are key members of our team! We are always looking for rally team members. If you are interested in being considered, send us an email!
I'VE NEVER CHEERED BEFORE. CAN I STILL BECOME A PERFORMING TEAM VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Absolutely! Prior experience is not required, as we welcome all skill levels. If you've never cheered before, or even if you have, we highly recommend attending our one of our open practices. Attending will help you get an understanding of cheer basics and the Cheer HNL team culture.
WHAT'S THE TIME COMMITMENT TO BE A VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Performing team volunteers typically practice three(3) Sundays each month from 3:00PM - 5:00PM in Honolulu at Ala Wai Park. Additionally, we have longer breaks over the summer and during holidays. It is important that performing team members attend all scheduled practices so that the team can be prepared and successful at planned events.
The performing team averages about two(2) events per month, including performance and non-performing appearances. The practice and event calendar is provided to team members at the beginning of each season so that team members can plan their personal schedules accordingly.
Rally team volunteers (non-performing volunteers) are welcome to attend practices, but are not required. Our rally members attend as many planned events as they are able to commit to.
IS THERE A FINANCIAL COMMITMENT TO BE A PART OF CHEER HONOLULU?
Volun-cheerleaders pay yearly membership dues in the amount of $100, which supports our overhead expenses including event registration fees, administrative tasks, website maintenance, etc. Dues can be paid in full or in two(2) installments of $50.
Additionally, performing volunteers must purchase a uniform and two t-shirts in the first year (cost around $150). These should last multiple seasons.
WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS?
We require all of our volunteers to be a minimum age of 18. We do not have—and will never have—an age limit.
DO I HAVE TO BE PART OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY TO JOIN?
We are a diverse and inclusive team. We welcome all genders and sexual orientations, and our volunteers can choose whichever version of our uniform they feel most comfortable in.
