FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Performing team volunteers learn and execute stunts, cheers, and dance routines to raise funds and aloha in our community. Individuals interested in joining the performing team are encouraged to attend one to two visitation practices before committing. Send us an email so that we can let you know when the next one is.
Production volunteers serve in a supportive role to help to ensure our performances and fundraisers are successful. We are always looking for production team members! If you are interested in being considered, send us an email!

I'VE NEVER CHEERED BEFORE. CAN I STILL BECOME A VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Absolutely! We welcome all skill levels, including beginners. We offer up to two visitation practices to gain comfortability with the team and the expectations before we ask for a commitment to the team.

WHAT'S THE TIME COMMITMENT TO BE A VOLUN-CHEERLEADER?
Performing team volunteers typically practice each Sundays each month from 4:00PM - 6:00PM at Oahu Taekwondo Center in Aiea. We have breaks scheduled throughout the year. It is important that performing team members attend all scheduled practices so that the team can be prepared and successful at planned events.
Performing team members are asked to attend as many events as they are able to commit to. Events pop up throughout the year, with some times busier than others. June (Pride Month) is busy, while other parts of the year see less action. Our only mandatory event for performing members is Honolulu Pride, which takes place for our 2022-23 season on Saturday October 15, 2022.

Production team volunteers (non-performing volunteers) are welcome to attend practices, but are not required. Our production members attend as many planned events as they are able to commit to.

IS THERE A FINANCIAL COMMITMENT TO BE A PART OF CHEER HONOLULU?
Once committed to joining the team, volun-cheerleaders pay annual membership dues in the amount of $100, which supports our overhead expenses including event registration fees, administrative tasks, website maintenance, etc. Dues can be paid in full or in two installments of $50. Additionally, performing volunteers must purchase a t-shirt in the first year (cost of $10 per shirt). This should last multiple seasons.

WHAT IS A PRODUCTION MEMBER?
Production members support the Cheer Honolulu performing team by looking after belongings (stored in a wagon), taking photos and videos of performing members in action, keeping track of supplies, and staffing information tables at events. Production members are also key in outreach; they participate in outreach at events, suggest future events, and assist in recruiting both performing and nonperforming members. Just like performing members, production members are considered part of the team!
